Newspaper Font

I spent a lot of time playing around with font styles to create a suitable match for my audience. I also used font websites such as

http://www.dafont.com/

where i found the font style 'Cheri Font' as seen below.

As bold as this font is i think that it does not suit all ages and would only be aimed for those of a younger generation.

I then used the generator to produce this font...

The font called 'Heartbreaker' is also to informal and it would not appeal to those of an older generation which is also my target audience.

Using the mac computers I decided to use the font 'Marker Felt' for my title. It is not too informal for a newspaper but it also expresses a relaxed effect for the reader.

Advertisment

For our final piece we were only allowed to use our own work, e.g. pictures. As most newspapers are funded by there sponsors, i decided to create an advertisement for my newspaper that would run across the bottom of the first page. I played around with ideas but decided to use the advertisement to publicise a new club that i had invented myself. I chose to advertise a club due to the idea that Southend is surrounded by night clubs and pubs, suitable for the student lifestyle. I made this advert before creating an entirely new advert using Photo Shop on the Mac computers.

I plaed with the computers effects using this picture which i wanted to include on my advert.

This was my first attempt using a older version of Photo Shop. As I was knew to the program.

Here is the result after I changed the colour and texture, using the newer version of Photoshop, ths would be the final design that i have chosen.

And this is my final advertisement to appear on my website and newspaper. I found that I was much more confident with the program and was able to play around with the settings for a more professional effect.

I used a photograph taken by myself for this advertisement and used bright colours such as puples and white against a black background, i found that this style expresses a youthful effect.

Logo

When the assignment was first put into place, I was working as a part of a team. This changed however after a discussion with our teacher that it would be more beneficial for my grade to commit to this assignment seperately. I decided to create a logo for my newspaper to make my newspaper recognizable to the readers. To play along with the title 'The Southend Scoop' i imagined the logo to resemble an ice cream cone. I made my creation from this a picture off of Google.

And re-made it into a design of my own, researching designs such as this helps create a feel for what people associate with the word ice cream.
This was my final logo result, which was made using photo shop.

The logo took me two and a half hours to create as I was trying to make each detail count. At this time i was still working as a part of a team, however my partner was not available for the day that I made this in class. My partner has decided not to use this as her logo for their individual piece of work. I was extremely happy to find out due to the fact that this was not their work.

Research into Tabloid Newspapers

I am going to research the form of tabloid newspapers. I will look at popular tabloid styles within the UK such as 'The Sun', 'The Daily Mirror' and 'The Daily Star' all of these companies provide news in a condensed form.

The Sun Newspaper

The Daily Star

The Daily Mirror

In Depth Structured Textual Analysis Questions A tabloid is a half sized newspaper, almost like a magazine, which is particularly suited to a high degree of photographic representation. Characteristics of a tabloid paper such as The Sun would include bold poster style layout and of course cheaper full page advertising and more regular single slots which appeal to advertisers who feel a their product is better promoted in a spot on its own, the tabloid category can also be sub-divided as there is a split between the popular dailies such as The Sun and The Mirror and papers such as the Daily Express and Daily Mail who have both changed from broadsheet to a tabloid in recent years. The news from the newspapers such as The Sun are often deemed to state false or over exaggerated views on certain subjects, people, world issues and events. It is mainly used for 'gossip' purposes hence the comparison to a magazine as well as its small attributes. The fact that the sun is only twenty pence on a daily basis means that the public do not have to spend much on finding out the news that they are entitled too. The fact that it is one of Britain’s cheapest newspapers, has a combination with the ever apparent recession that has hit many people and do not have the money to waste. The fact that topless women are used both on the front cover or on the historically known 'page 3' models prove that the papers are mainly for male interest however some attributes such as the Dear Deidre column, in which the agony aunt tries to sort out the public’s problems, are aimed towards the female audience.

Research Into Newspaper Terms

I researched newspaper terms to advise me through the creative process to have a clear understanding of every detail that i will need to create the correct and precise newspaper layout. I was unable to copy and paste the work that I did find so here is the hyperlink, below, that has helped me emensly with my understanding of the newspaper creative process.

Brainstorm

I brainstormed ideas that would help me create a successful piece of work. I was told that my newspaper had to be local so decided to think of ideas, objects and things overly to do with the Southend area. As Southend is a seaside town it came to my attention to relate my title and logo around that of the seaside theme. I decided on playing with the idea of ice cream and had a vision of an ice cream cone as my logo which then led me to the idea of naming my newspaper 'The Daily Scoop' after much deliberation and I decided that a daily newspaper would be far too much work and would not be able to be published every day at its currently free price. I then decided to use 'The Southend Scoop' as using alliteration made my title catchy and interesting.

Statement Of Intent

I will be focusing on brief eight which involves creating the first two pages of a new local , together with a poster for the newspaper and two hyperlinked pages from the papers website. I will create a logo specified to this particular brief. I will brainstorm ideas for possible articles and features to appear on the two pages and website. I want to create a create an enticing new local newspaper for the southend area, full of all the information and goings on in the seaside town. I also want to involve advertisements from local events, as my newspaper is free i will need to use these advertisement contacts to fund our newspaper, and to really create a believable piece, that people of all ages can read. I plan to have this work produced by the date of deadline in April/May. The newspaper will be released weekly and will be available on news stands at any rail station and readers will be given the option to recieve by post. I chose to make this free due to the recession, I felt that it was unfair to charge people for wanting to know the news in their area.
